Sweet star fruit, also known as carambola, is a tropical fruit celebrated for its unique star-shaped cross-sections and mildly sweet flavor. These fruits are elongated and feature five distinct ridges running down their sides, forming a perfect star when sliced. The skin ripens to a vibrant golden yellow or orange-yellow, while the translucent flesh is crisp, juicy, and largely fiber-free.
Sweet varieties are specifically cultivated for higher sugar and lower oxalic acid levels, making them more palatable than sour types. Their flavor blends subtle notes of apple, pear, grape, and citrus, offering a refreshing bite with a hint of tang. Sweet star fruits are best enjoyed fresh, used as garnishes, or included in juices and desserts. They are low in calories but rich in Vitamin C, antioxidants, and fiber. However, due to their oxalic acid content, people with kidney conditions should avoid consuming them.
